    Gay and trans sex workers slam website seizure

    A major sex serve advertising website has been seized and shut down by the FBI, affecting sex workers in Australia.

    Backpage was a popular site for sex workers, and the primary source of work for many gay and trans workers.

    It was seized and its founder charged with enabling prostitution and sex trafficking after a raid on Friday.

    The shutdown is part of a wider international crackdown by US authorities on sex work and sexual content online, following passage of the Interrupt Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and Fight Online Sex Trafficking Operate (SESTA-FOSTA).

    Gay sex worker Lee, based in Townsville, said workers will be substantially affected by the loss of Backpage.

    “I’ve just moved out of a house with three other sex workers, and they were all on Backpage,” he said.

    “Up here, that site and a couple of others are our bread and butter. And it’s not just us that suffer—it’s the clients as well.”

    Lee said clients may be forced to try connecting with sex workers using apps such as Grindr, which do not allow it, or by going to beats.

    An Idaho man was sentenced to 28 years in prison Wednesday on a federal hate crime accuse after he pleaded responsible to luring a homosexual man with a shirtless photo of himself and an offer of sex on the website Backpage.com, then kicking the male to death with steel-toed boots.

    Kelly Schneider, 23, posted the Backpage.com advertisement on April 27, 2016, and met up with Steven Nelson after the older man responded online. Schneider took Nelson's money but didn't have sex with him. "Before the experience, [Schneider] told his friends that he was not gay and would not let anyone who was gay touch him," according to his plea agreement.

    Schneider met Nelson later that night in the parking lot of the local WalMart, then drove with Nelson to an isolated wildlife area where he had told several friends to wait so they could help him steal Nelson.

    When the two men got to the wildlife area, Schneider immediately started attacking Nelson. "While shod in steel-toed boots, the defendant kicked [Nelson] 20 to 30 times, repeatedly saying, 'Did you believe I would fucking execute this, you [gay slur]?" according to the plea agreement.
