Gay Bermuda is an easy locate on the internet with many comments and venues offered on the BBs and travel chat rooms, especially from LGBT folks who have explored the Caribbean aboard cruise ships. There are about two dozen destinations in the Caribbean that are variously praised for different reasons. The main ones are the climate, the beaches, clear azure waters for diving, a sprinkling of LGBT venues on certain islands–and the comforts of the ships or hotels.
Bermuda is also attractive because of its location, only 770 miles (1238 km) from New York. The legislative body of the Bermuda Islands had already decided in 1994 to legalise sex between men aged 18 and over. Previously, both homosexual and heterosexual anal and oral sex were punishable by up to ten years of imprisonment. Nevertheless, the government was alarmed by negative evaluations in a queer travel guide, which attested the islands a strongly negative attitude towards homosexuals. The Ministry of Tourism responded immediately to the criticism and contacted both the guide and the gay and lesbian group. The ministry feared that such advice could clue those interested in travelling to Bermuda to reconsider. In 2013, parliament passed an anti-discrimination law making discrimination based on sexual orientation punishable. In May 2017, Bermuda's Supreme Court ruled that marriage should be open to everyone - after which the government passed a statute excluding same-sex marriage but allowing registered partnerships. In June 2018 the commandment was rejected by the Supreme Court and in November by the Court of Appeal. Since then marriage for all is officially introduced.
