While filming their love scene for Colette, Keira Knightley and Denise Gough were flabbergasted by the suggestion that a queer sexpert link them on set to share a few pointers. Keira explains that director Wash Westmoreland was concerned, “given that he’s not a woman, that he wouldn’t understand what the sex might be like”. Denise chuckles, “We were like, ‘…Excuse me?’”
We’re in a five star hotel in London’s Soho and all three of us are giggling so firm we’re close to tears. This mood of frivolity and faint hysteria carries on throughout our interview. Keira and Denise are a riot – heated, welcoming and relaxed, even more so because they’re here together and clearly get along splendidly. They laugh loudly, swear liberally and offer up forthright opinions freely and often. There is no publicist in the room to intervene when things earn too titillating. It’s just Keira, Denise and me, and the theme is, “Say whatever the fuck you feel”.

When I first came out to my parents, I couldn’t bring myself to use the term bisexual. There was something about it that felt so confirmed and definite.
I knew that I had my own internalised stigma around the designation that I hadn’t quite worked through yet. Labelling what I was feeling as anything legitimate honestly scared the shit out of me.
Instead, I came out as questioning at first. No real explanation but a simple ‘Hey Mum and Dad, I think I’m questioning my sexuality.’
Luckily, after a limited coming out tears from me, hugs from my parents and some curious comments I’d expected, I had taken my unknown truthfulness and released it. And, at the time, that was enough for me. It was the truth I felt and it was the weight I had been holding onto for too long by myself.
Once I released it, I could undergo myself take a breath and present myself permission to finally discover who I am.
Now, as a 21-year-old fully loud and arrogant bisexual badass, I like to contemplate back to what influenced me in my queer awakening. Specifically, I convey on which pop culture icons were a bit more than just ‘female role models.’

"We both turned up an hour late, and I'd been filming Bend It Fond of Beckham, and I turned up in leather pants and a crop superior, and she was a model for a while, and she'd been in Paris shooting something, and she turned up as the boy, so she had a inky tie with ripped jeans on," Knightley says.

The school administration was not pleased with what happened next. "And everybody else was completely dressed up, obviously, in that benign of finery, and then we had our picture taken underneath the thing," the 29-year-old actress thinks back, "And she's kissing me, and we were told that that was disgusting."
