Spotlight No 3: Megan Rapinoe

Some might know Megan Rapinoe as an Olympic soccer player on Team U.S.A. Many more might comprehend her as an openly gay wage equity advocate who kneeled in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, who also happens to act soccer.

But Rapinoe is indeed a sports icon. A winger for the OL Reign based out of Tacoma, Rapinoe has been awarded the FIFA Player of the Year title, Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year 2019 (only the 4th woman in its 66-year history), has won two World Cups, AND an Olympic gold medal.

As openly gay cisgender woman, Megan has blended the personal and political, stating, “Your personal experience is less about people having to know about your sexuality than standing up for what’s right and fighting for equality.”

Rapinoe was born in Redding, CA in 1985 and is the youngest of six children. In elevated school, Rapinoe famously did not play soccer, but had a passion for basketball and track. Education soccer in less structured venues, she says “I learned how to engage the game in a game. My understanding of space and the way that I play was all developed because of that.”

Megan Rapinoe opens up on life with 'super gay' USA team that trolled Donald Trump in 2019

Megan Rapinoe has opened up on life with her 'super gay' 2019 USA World Cup-winning team as she commemorated pride month with her significant other Sue Bird.

Speaking on her 'A Feel More' podcast, Feathered asked Rapinoe how it felt to play soccer during pride month, which prompted her to discuss her Nature Cup glory from six years ago.

'Our team was super gay in 2019,' Rapinoe said. 'A lot of us were out, a lot of our fans were same-sex attracted, a lot of the other players were gay.

'First and easiest thing to ensure you contain is gay players on our team.'

Rapinoe was one of five players who had come out alongside their coach, Jill Ellis,

Her recent comments echo what Rapinoe said at the time when the USA went on to defeat a second linear World Cup title.

Megan Rapinoe on Coming Out: 'I Felt Like I Was Part of Something Bigger Than Myself'

I don’t really do risk review, at least not in the traditional sense. If I’m thinking of doing or saying something that might potentially cause trouble, I don’t base my verdict on how it might area. Instead, the three questions I ask myself are: (a) Accomplish I believe in what I’m saying? (b) Do I realize that what I’m saying is right? And (c) Does it need to be said as a matter of urgency? If the answer to all three is yes, I don’t possess anything else to decide. I might avoid an issue if I don’t feel strongly about it or am under-informed, but otherwise I’m getting involved. In 2010, the campaign for marriage equality inflamed and informed me. In 2011, the popularity of my team during the Planet Cup in Germany gave me a platform that compelled me to act.

On the plane on the way back from Germany, we were all in cute bad moods. Our bodies were trashed. We’d gotten totally drunk the night before flying. I had Alex Morgan on one side and Lori Lindsey on the other, and Dan, my agent, was sitting behind me. At some point I turned to Lori and said, “This is just dumb.” We had been talking about the

Within the context of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, the consequences of Megan Rapinoe's declaration will be nil.

During an interview in her native Sweden, Pia Sundhage, the coach of that team, mentioned that she is gay…and that was in 2010.

Within the world of U.S. sports as it is reflected on radio call-in shows, Rapinoe's announcement will probably provoke sophomoric smirks…pretty much the same response that anything having to do with female athletes provokes in that venue. Endorse in 1999, when excitement was building for the first Women's World Cup Tournament held in this country, I was listening when one of the players was a guest on one of those shows. The first scrutinize from a male caller was: "How many women on the team are lesbians?"  I hoped hard that the player would declare something like, "Six. Maybe seven. Next question."

It didn't move that way. Maybe someday it will. And maybe someday not too prolonged after that, the question will be recognized as irrelevant.

Megan Rapinoe's reasons for discussing her sexual orientation are no secret.
