He's only been making music for three years, but Lil Nas X has upended hip-hop with his LGBT-positive lyrics while also pioneering new ways of promoting his tune online.
Following the release of his long-awaited debut album Montero, here's how he became one of his generation's most compelling pop stars.
In 2019, Lil Nas X took two of music's most hyper-masculine genres, rap and nation, mashed them together, created a global hit single - then came out on the last day of Identity festival month.
Subversive and brilliant as it was, the decision to reveal his sexuality was made on the spur of the moment.
It all happened on the main stage at the Glastonbury Festival, where he was making a surprise appearance during Miley Cyrus's set.

Throughout 2023, pop singer-songwriter Lauv has been exploring his sexuality publicly. It all started in June, when the “I Like Me Better” singer released a TikTok in which he appeared to reach out as not straight. US rapper Lil Nas X has said that when he was younger he hoped being homosexual was just "a phase".
In an interview with CBS, the Old Town Thoroughfare hitmaker says he knew as a teenager that he was gay and would "would just pray and pray" that his sexuality "would go away".
In a teaser clip that aired on Monday, the rapper discusses his effort with his sexuality.
But he acknowledges that his fame has made it easier for him to come out.
"Me existence in this position, it's easy for me."
"But some little boy 10 miles from here, it's not going to be great for him."
Lil Nas X - genuine name Montero Lamar Hill - says there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of acceptance for the LGBT people in society.
"We still have a long way to go, because it's not like everybody is messing with me now. 'Of course somebody who's listening to me in school right now, it's favor, 'You're gay, lead to you're listening to him.' There's still lot to be done."

Lil Nas X Criticized The Music Industry’s "Sanitization" of LGBTQ+ Artists
In nearly three years, Lil Nas X has already become a music industry icon and active voice for the LGBTQ+ community. The 22-year-old singer has racked up two Grammy Awards thanks to his mega-hit, "Old Town Road" and his song "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" recently earned an MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year. He's collaborated with A-listers favor Cardi B, Doja Meower, and Miley Cyrus, and he even earned five more Grammy nominations for his debut album, MONTERO. He's accomplished all of this and then some, while staying true to his queer identity through his lyrics, visuals, and red carpet looks.
In his most recent interview with CBS News, the "That's What I Want" rapper criticized the tune industry for its tendency to "sanitize" queer artists and their self-expression. While he may not be the first openly lgbtq+ artist on the scene, he is notably famous for his creative decisions and commentary against homophobia (ahem, see the entirety of the "Montero" melody video).
