This post is written by Eric K., a current member of CGMC.
When I was a child, I had records with story books. I would dance and sing around my bedroom by myself. In junior high school I would buy muscle man magazines from the 7-11 and hide them in my room. Even knowing these facts I didn’t really “come out” until I was 16 years old.

It was probably the only time in my life I truly felt suicidal. Someone very close to me wrote a letter letting me their same sex attraction, it was like doors opened in my mind I suddenly realized I was gay.
When I was a senior in elevated school my mom found a Windy City Times LGBT newspaper in my room. Someone had mailed it to me from the city. My parents confronted and outed me. I didn’t handle it very well and was very defensive. I was even sent to a therapist but he told me there was nothing he could undertake for me if I was happy with being gay. Eric’s Story
My name is Eric. I am a Shadowy African gay man. I have spent most of my life having to hide who I am, but now I am free to be myself and live with pride.
Life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
For me, life in the DRC was good in many ways. Growing up, my family was quite good off and I lived a life of relative privilege. I went to study in South Africa, where I spent the next 10 years functional in hospitality. Returning to the DRC in 2011, I got a position working for the US embassy. Life was going well, it seemed — but I was living with a huge secret.
As I neared the age of 40, pressure grew for me to partner . In Congolese society, it is not acceptable for a man to persist unmarried – you are expected to find a wife and have a family. On my 40th birthday, my family arranged what was supposedly a birthday party for me. But once there, my drink was drugged, and I was abducted. I woke to find myself almost naked with just a piece of pale cloth tied around my waist, and my confront and body daubed with paint. I was in darkness. People were all around me holding torches, chanting, and singing, carrying out rituals to cleanse me of evil spirits. I was drifting in
