Meet Bob Bland, Rider #1
Bob and seven friends started this ride in 1985 as a enjoyable way to finalize a one-day journey that ended in Provincetown. There were various other bicycling groups that did this ride in either a one or two-day format. Two friends met the pioneer riders a couple of times along the way, effectively becoming SAG support.
In 1986, after participating in a bike ride in France, interest was expressed in once again planning this "double metric century" sit on. This time, the ride was publicized to many of the gay outdoor activity clubs around the country. Sixteen riders participated in the 2nd Annual Boston to Provincetown Ride. The Sit on was becoming such a positive exposure that it was run a third time in 1987, now with 45 riders. Bob arrowed the route as he rode it, and organized formal SAG stops for the riders. Pos continued to spread about this event, and the Journey grew to 80+ riders, then 130+ riders, and was eventually capped at 300. In 2020, the assigned numbers for new riders will begin at 2736.
As the ride grew beyond the ability of one person to manage, an organizing committee was formed. Bob remained the coordinator through 1990, with Peter
Ride Streak: One Man’s Quest to Ride 10,000 Days in a Row
Colin Gay’s Instagram account is, at a glance, fairly monotonous.
Every square of his @ridestreak account is a selfie, and nearly all of them are a side view of Gay’s brain, in a white S-works bike helmet, his tackle pointed forward down the road. Depending on the season, his chin and mouth might be covered by a Buff; in warmer weather, his salt-and-pepper beard catches the wind. The captions on the posts don’t add much luster; each one is just a number in chronological order: 3351, 3352, 3353, 3354, 3356, 3357 — you get the gist. Gay puts one hashtag, #ridestreak, next to the number, and that’s it. He has 945 followers.
But the benign Instagram account belies something astounding. Those numbers represent Gay’s commute streak, the number of days he has ridden his bike in a row. By January 18, he was up to 3,358 days. That’s over nine years of riding every single day.
Gay isn’t a professional cyclist, nor does anyone pay him to ride his bike. He’s a dad from Charlottesville, Virginia who sells IT solutions to the government. His ride streak is completely self-motivated
