Gay cruising in toilets

Let’s Examine the Phenomenon of Cruising Bathrooms Through 4 Famous Queer Men

Throughout history and for a variety of reasons, lgbtq+ men have looked to public bathrooms as places to get laid. Some men enjoy cruising public restrooms because they’re turned on by the exhibitionism and the possibility of getting caught, while others look it as a place to anonymously and discretely possess a same-sex interaction in times when being outed as queer carries harsh social, political and legal consequences.

Cruising general restrooms has change into an ingrained part of queer history, with mixed feelings surrounding it. On one hand, it’s considered so seedy, sexy and transgressive that “toilet tramp” hookup scenes possess become a usual scenario in queer porn (and even inspired drawings of gay erotic illustrator Tom of Finland).

On the other hand, it’s also considered by some to be a black side of gay sexuality and history that has been used to shame queer men for their otherwise benevolent sexual proclivities (often in the mention of protecting children or public decency).

Noting both sides, homosexual video game artist Robert Yang made a bathroom cruising video game in 2017 entitled The

More support when I was a wee lad, but even on occassion now, I would see messages scribed into the walls of universal bathrooms that read:

Looking to give BJ

Red jacket by 3rd stall

Now then, since I wasn’t in the market to gave strange guys do that sort of thing to me, I can’t say I ever popped by at 7:15. However, it seems to me that this is a better way to get the crap beat out of you than to get some sort of earthly delight. So, I figure…
(A) Homosexual bashers post such notes in direct to beat up those who illustrate up
(B) Queer people post such notes and are beaten up by gay bashers who respond
© Both A & B occur, which would make for an interesting sight.
(D) Gay people display such notes and are met by other gay people and all is well.

Anyone know which of those was most frequent? Enjoy I said, it seems like a hoax to me, but then I guess it was harder to get together homosexuals back then which would illustrate why you don’t see as many notes now (more acceptance). But even still, there’s got to be a better way. Oh well… such is the mind of white heterosexual upper-middle class suburban youth.

How did toilet cruising work?

I was reading an queer travel guide from 1980, and it reminded me that I've never understood the mechanics of the toilet pick-up. One of the notable features of the guide is that among all the bars and bathhouses listed, many locations also suggest cruising toilets. This seems soinherently sketchy. How would you know when it was safe to signal to somebody? Don't you scamper the constant risk of an embarrassing and risky confrontation? Do you actually have sex in the bathroom, or is a rendezvous point? And given that these locations are so well established that they appear in a travel guide, wouldn't they be easy pickings for the police?

Any info or stories about etiquette and risk mitigation would be of interest.

Bonus points if you can explain how toilet cruising worked in an international context. After a strong warning about how dangerous cruising is in the Middle East, for example, the guide lists toilets in Syria and Kuwait. There are similar listings throughout the society. While cruising in the U.S. sounds risky, it seems like only those with a death long for would cruise toilets as a tou
