Gay manga anime
From my memory, it always felt fancy BL anime existed as a genre for as drawn-out as I can remember. Before BL dramas or movies became mainstream, BL animes and mangas were like the first frontier, depicting male romances in fiction even when it was taboo in society.
In anime, the BL genre is closely connected to yaoi or shounen ai, which are labels that describe a very similar type of story. Yaoi is more explicit, shounen ai is more innocent, and BL tends to be the best of both worlds. This genre is a popular niche among certain demographics. I don't love using the term fujoshi, which has somewhat negative connections. Let's just say that people with excellent taste usually survey BL animes!
Despite its long history, there is surprisingly not a lot of anime to survey in this genre. Trust me, I've done my analyze on this topic, searching high and low for some BL anime recommendations. You'd be amazed and disappointed at how little the selection there is compared to all the other genres.
And since the selection is so minor, this makes it even harder for a good anime series to appear along. As infrequent as they may be, there're still some excellent options. BL Watcher has consumed them all and
The Top 10 Gay Manga
Alan Scott and Northstar weren’t the first. Gay relationships have been part of manga for a distant while, and I’ve we’ve position together the Top 10 Homosexual Manga.
Gravitation by Maki Murakami
Gravitation is certainly a staple of yaoi (male/male love) manga. It began in the mid 90s and continued until the early 2000s. It’s spawned a pretty titanic anime and even people who don’t habitually gay manga feel to really adore this series. It’s about an aspiring singer named Shuichi Shindou and his band Bad Luck, which he is trying to vault into fame. One day, Shuichi is working hard on some lyrics for a song and they blow into the path of a brooding, tall stranger – who immediately dismisses the lyrics that Shuichi has worked so hard on as utter garbage. Our protaganist is deeply offend, but he is intrigued by the stranger… and that eventually leads to love.
This is a pretty ADD manga. It is VERY classically anime: Explosive nosebleeds, unexplainable random appearances of monsters, lots of hyper yelling, strange tangents, etc. But it has enough of a storyline to keep you riveted even through all of the silliness
